Recipe Basics

  • Total Prep Time: 15 minutes

  • Servings: 1

  • Total Ingredients: 9

Ingredients

  • ½ cup turkey breast

  • ½ cup boiled ham

  • ½ cup Monterey Jack cheese (or ½ cup American cheese, as a swap)

  • 2 medium carrots, peeled

  • 2 celery ribs

  • 3 tablespoons salsa

  • 3 tablespoons ranch dressing

  • 1 slice angel food cake

  • ½ pint strawberries, hulled (frozen strawberries work as a great substitute)

Instructions

  1. Cut the turkey, ham, and cheese into bite-sized cubes. Slice carrots and celery into thin sticks, then add all of these savory items to your lunch box.

  2. Mix salsa and ranch dressing in a small sealable container to make your savory dipping sauce, then add the container to the lunch box.

  3. Cut the angel food cake into bite-sized cubes, place them in a separate small container, and add to the lunch box.

  4. Puree the strawberries with a small splash of water or juice in a blender. Pour the puree into another small sealable container for dipping the cake cubes.

Community Question & Discussion

Question from a middle school user: My friends and I are in middle school, and we’ve fallen into a pretty boring, unhealthy lunch routine. Our school lunch is really bad, so we usually get fast food — we take advantage of having a Marco’s Pizza so close by. A few weeks ago, we all started a new diet together, and we’ve actually gone 3 whole weeks without fast food! We’re really proud of how we’ve done so far. I was so excited when the school started offering salads, but we all got tired of plain salad super fast, just like we got tired of fast food. I found this site looking for something new to mix up our routine. Is this recipe actually a healthy option for us?

User Reviews

Wonderful! This is such a clever idea. My daughter isn’t a big fan of everyday sandwiches, so this was perfect for her. Thank you for sharing!

Good base recipe, but I question the health claim. It has cake! I just swap the cake for a small side salad to fit my goals. Still, it’s a fun recipe that’s great for breaking up a boring lunch routine with my friends.

This was fantastic! It’s so nice to switch things up from the same boring sandwich every day. My whole family loved it, and I love that it’s mostly healthy with just a small sweet treat — that’s the perfect kind of lunch, in my opinion!

About the Recipe Submitter

This recipe was submitted by a stay-at-home mom with two kids, a wonderful husband, and two hungry roommates. Art is her hobby, and she’s working to turn it into her full-time career.

A note from the submitter:

After a half-hour debate, my husband and our roommates settled on this clear rating system for all the recipes I share. I reserve the right to bump a rating up or down half a star based on recipe quality, ease of prep, and other factors. It’s been a couple years since I updated this intro, so I wanted to note how much my kids’ tastes have changed: my once extremely picky daughter now loves California rolls, will try almost anything, and is far less picky than the average 7-year-old around here. My 2-and-a-half-year-old son asks for salad for lunch, then eats the whole thing — he’s our little weirdo, in the best way :)

I always try to write honest, detailed reviews, and I really appreciate the same transparency when people review my recipes. Not every family will like every recipe, and what one person dislikes, another will love! I also aim to be polite in all my reviews — there’s no reason not to be. The only thing that makes me frustrated enough to be harsh is a badly written recipe that leaves me with a huge extra mess to clean up in my kitchen.

My Official Rating Scale:

  • ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: "No one can have this often because it’s highly addictive and gets inhaled immediately!" Dump cakes, sweet salsa chicken, and wasabi peanuts all fall into this category for us.

  • ⭐⭐⭐⭐: "We love this and will make it regularly. It’s a new family favorite."

  • ⭐⭐⭐: "This is good. We’d eat it again without any changes, it just isn’t our top favorite."

  • ⭐⭐: "We didn’t love this, but we’d eat it again if it was served. It would be better with adjustments, it just wasn’t to our taste."

  • ⭐: "We’d only eat this again with a lot of extra condiments to mask the taste."

  • No stars: This just means I wanted to share a comment without assigning a rating. It does NOT mean this recipe is worse than a 1-star recipe!

I only publicly share recipes I’ve actually cooked myself and that my family has enjoyed — every recipe I post is at least 3 stars on this scale. All my photos shared on forums are hosted on Flickr.
