Step-by-Step Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, beat together eggs, eggnog, rum, sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt, and vanilla until fully smooth and combined.
Coat both sides of every bread slice in the egg mixture, then arrange the slices snugly in a greased, oven-safe Pyrex dish. Pour any leftover mixture evenly over the top of the bread.
Cover the dish tightly and refrigerate overnight. For advance prep, you can freeze the assembled dish, then transfer it to the fridge to defrost the night before you plan to serve it.
Bake on the bottom rack of a 450°F (230°C) oven for 20–25 minutes. Keep an eye on the bottom of the toast to prevent it from browning too quickly.
Move the baked french toast to a cooling rack to rest for a few minutes, then dust with icing sugar.
Serve warm, topped with Canadian maple syrup and melted butter.

"Mmm, french toast and eggnog — two great tastes that taste even better together. Baking is way easier than frying, and you use way less fat, which balances out the richness from the eggnog. This recipe is so easy and so delicious. It made the perfect Christmas breakfast! I used a jelly roll pan, and the bread soaked up all the batter overnight perfectly."
"This is such a delicious dish. I’ve made a similar version before that was great, but I recommend swapping regular syrup for hot cranberry sauce — it takes this to another level."
"This was a fantastic treat, I’ve actually made it twice! The first time I used Texas toast, and I wasn’t crazy about the texture myself, but everyone else loved it. The second time I used a regular French loaf, and it turned out absolutely superb. I’ll be making this all the time going forward."
"Yum! I made this for Christmas morning breakfast, and everyone loved it. Thanks Bergy!"
"Excellent, easy breakfast. I popped it in the oven, then had plenty of time to make fresh fruit salad and bacon while it baked. We enjoyed this so much over the holidays, and it’s definitely going to become a tradition in our home. The aroma of it baking got my teenagers out of bed — that’s really saying something. Thanks Bergy for another wonderful recipe!"

One home cook shared this delicious twist:
"Oh yum! I made this for Thanksgiving morning, and we all loved it. The only change I made was swapping French bread for Pepperidge Farm brown sugar cinnamon bread, and I did two layers since their slices are less than an inch thick. I had leftover batter, so I soaked extra bread and cooked it in my waffle iron for eggnog french toast waffles — that’s my go-to trick for extra french toast. This recipe is so delicious, we’re already planning to make it again for Christmas breakfast."

This year, I’ll celebrate 9 wonderful years as part of the Zaar community, and I can’t imagine life without it! It’s become a core part of my daily routine, and I feel so privileged to be one of the hosts on the Photo Forum. Photographing my cooking projects is a full-time hobby that I absolutely love. All my friends know what to expect when they come for dinner: they always joke “Are you done taking pictures yet?” but I never keep them waiting too long, and the food is never cold!
I now have over 6,000 photos uploaded to Zaar — some are pretty great, and some are definitely not. I’m happy to say practice really does make progress, and my photography has gotten so much better over the years.
I’m originally from Vancouver, BC, Canada — a beautiful city that holds so many wonderful memories for me. In 1990, I decided I wanted to settle in a smaller community for retirement, and I found my slice of heaven in the North Okanagan, BC. I love living here, but every now and then I miss the bright city lights, Broadway shows, and all the incredible small ethnic restaurants that Vancouver is known for. That’s an easy fix, though: I just take a trip to the coast, visit friends for a weekend, catch a show, and feast on dim sum and other specialty foods.
I’m getting up in years, but I’ve always been an adventurous person. I’ve river rafted Hell’s Gate on the Fraser River, flown in a glider over Hawaii (no, not a hang glider!), gone hot air ballooning in Napa Valley and the Fraser Valley, driven dune buggies on the Oregon dunes, gone parasailing in Mexico, and tried so many other fun, challenging adventures. I haven’t tried bungee jumping or skydiving yet… but I still might!
I love to travel and experience new cultures. Mexico has long been one of my favorite places to visit, and I’ve been there dozens of times. Australia and England are two other favorite destinations of mine!
In the 16 months before posting this, I lost 61 pounds and I feel wonderful. I’m off all medications, and all systems are go! I may be 79 years old, but in spirit I’m still in my forties. We’re only as old as we let ourselves feel. My advice: always think positive, do something a little challenging every day, and always do something silly every day. Be a kid again! Laugh every day — it’s internal jogging.
